\r\n本次活動邀請到雪梨科技大學（UTS）設計學院特聘教授 Peter McNeil 蒞臨分享。McNeil 教授為澳洲人文學院院士（FAHA），專研服裝史、時尚研究與視覺文化，研究領域橫跨十八世紀至當代，整合服裝、視覺與社會史等跨學科視角，在國際學界享有盛譽。

\r\nThe Institute of Visual Studies cordially invites faculty and students to a series of lectures and forums by Professor Peter McNeil, an internationally renowned scholar in design history and fashion studies.
\r\nProfessor McNeil is a distinguished professor at the College of Design, University of Technology Sydney, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA). His research spans from the eighteenth century to the present, encompassing dress history, fashion studies, and visual culture, with a distinctive approach that integrates clothing, visual arts, and social history across disciplinary boundaries. His sustained engagement with fashion as both visual culture and social phenomenon has made a significant contribution to the field of dress and fashion history worldwide. Alongside his research, Professor McNeil is deeply engaged in curatorial practice and academic affairs. He is a former President of the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand (AAANZ) and has served as the editor for several prestigious academic journals

\r\nA Cinema of Free Association: The Dual Operations of Puerto Rican State-Sponsored Film, re-routes the global film cultures and currents of the midcentury through Puerto Rico's Division of Community Education (hereafter referred to as the "DivEdCo") to retroactively map a Caribbean presence in the emergence of the cinematic new waves of the 1960s. Their films, mainly focused on civic education and economic development, have often been dismissed a propaganda. Contrary to this established history, this project shows how individual artists worked through and at the margins of their institution's demands to make an internationalist, pan-American cinema, thus re-attaching this new idea of a wayfaring Puerto Rican cinema of the midcentury to broader discourses in both North Atlantic and Latin American film histories.

\r\nMaritime museums in port cities are the repository on land of activities taking place at sea. A museum's collection presents various types of past and present maritime activities, commerce being one of them. The representation of maritime trade depicts a history of connected networks bringing different peoples and cultures into contact with each other across seas and oceans. It casts a reflective light on nautical economics and their histories, considering both the fortunes and hardships that have accompanied the formation of an increasingly interconnected world. In looking at the representation of nautical trade in the exhibits of maritime museums, this talk will explore the manner through which commerce from ancient times to the period of modern globalisation is perceived and comes to inform the present.

\r\nGabriel N. Gee is an art historian, writer and curator, based in Switzerland. He joined Franklin University in 2011, where he teaches contemporary art history and theory. His research interests include the arts of port cities, interconnected global histories, and contemporary artistic research. He edited with Caroline Wiedmer a volume on Maritime Poetics (Transcript 2021). He is the initiator and co-founder of the interdisciplinary study group TETI, (Textures and Experiences of Trans-Industriality), active through workshops, exhibitions, culinary events, and through a press, which recently launched a journal available online and in print: TETI Journal n.1 looked at “Transindustriality” (2024), TETI Journal n.2 (2025) explores the topic of “Hybrid Marines”.

\r\nDialogues between culinary and contemporary art practices have surged in past decades, in parallel to a growing interest in environmental transformations and identity seen through the prism of food ecologies. Food allows for a reflection on processes of cultural development, as well as an investigation into the management of resources, the representation of natural and social inhabitats. This talk aims to reflect on the interplay between arts and the culinary, with a particular emphasis on coastal spaces and maritime encounters, as they come to channel histories of taste and migration, of embodied experiences evident in culinary traditions and cultures. The approach draws from a multi-folded practice developed over the past few years at the research group TETI, combining investigative research on site, oral history, culinary iterations involving collective dialogue and encounters, storytelling, poem-objects, and video production.

\r\nThis talk focuses on Professor Giorgio Biancorosso latest monograph Remixing Wong Kar-wai:
\r\nMusic, Bricolage, and the Aesthetics of Oblivion (Duke University Press, 2025), with its Chinese edition scheduled for release next month. The event features a conversation between the author and the translator.
\r\nLike his fellow filmmakers Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, and Sofia Coppola, Wong Kar-wai crafts the soundtracks of his films by jettisoning original scores in favor of commercial recordings. In Remixing Wong Kar-wai, Giorgio Biancorosso examines the combinatorial practice at the heart of Wong's cinema to retheorize musical borrowing, appropriation, and repurposing.
\r\nWong's irrepressible penchant for poaching music from other films-whether old Chinese melodramas, Hollywood blockbusters, or European art films-subsumes familiar music under his own brand of cinema. As Wong combs through musical and cinematic archives and splices disparate music together, exceedingly well-known music loses its previous associations and acquires an infinite new constellation of meanings in his films. Drawing on Claude Lévi-Strauss's concept of bricolage, Biancorosso contends that Wong's borrowing is akin to a practice of creative destruction in which Wong becomes a bricoleur who remixes music at hand to create new and complete, self-sustaining statements. By outlining Won's modus operandi of indiscriminate borrowing and remixing, Biancorosso prompts readers to reconsider the significance of transforming preexisting music into new compositions for film and beyond.

\r\nIn her most recent film Elegies (2023), Ann Hui documents Hong Kong's poetry through several of its leading lights. Although the film focuses on living poets, its English-language title points to a poetic form defined by loss and retrospection. In exploring Hui's mobilization of elegy as that which connects poetry and cinema, this talk develops a critical reassessment of the notions of death and disappearance that have theoretically framed Hong Kong cinema in the contemporary period. Hui's cinematic elegy sets into clear contrast the double edge of disappearance as both an obstruction to and source of historical insight.

\r\n資深電影文化工作者羅卡卡叔親身憶述成長心路——童年生活於澳門，在兩極分化的冷戰中渡過其青年歲月，後來港升讀大學，由主修數理到擁抱文藝，任職《中國學生周報》主編電影版，拍過實驗電影，處身動亂憂患，遠赴羅馬遊學，回港適逢影視革新，積極推動電影文化，投身研究工作。卡叔見證香港的變革和繁榮時期，他與電影和藝術同行七十年，電影總伴他走過複雜多變的世界；面對時代洪流，有失意苦悶，更有熱情篤定，惟有在壓抑之中探索出路。本片紀錄卡叔重遊故地，懷想故友，配合大量珍貴資料圖片和片段，交織成一部關於香港的回憶錄。

\r\nIn the midst of a new Cold War, 80-year old Hong Kong film critic Law Kar reflects on his memories of the last century in a city where cultural and political forces meet head to head to uncover root causes of today’s ideological clash, and the critical role that cinema has played in defining “right” and “wrong”.
\r\nHaving devoted much of his career to programming and film history research, Law Kar places himself before the camera for the first time. This nostalgic trip down memory lane, as he recounts his personal and cinematic experiences, from film criticism, experimental filmmaking to auditioning for Federico Fellini, culminates in a brief history of Hong Kong cinema itself. Reflecting on the past 80 years, Law Kar’s affectionate documentary sheds light on local movies and Chinese cinema, brooding over the socio-political transformation of the perplexed city, as the restless cinephile ponders the role cinema and art play in times of crisis.

\r\n主題｜歷史中的想像：文藝復興時期英格蘭的時間與空間異想

\r\n講題: "Lolita and Decora: the "Kawaii" Aesthetic Movement from Harajuku to the World"

\r\nLolita and Decora are the two youth subcultures with distinct aesthetic expressions that emerged in the mid to late 1990s in Harajuku which has become a hub of the “kawaii” culture and fashion. Lolita fashion is inspired by the 19th-century Victorian dress with frills and ribbons, while Decora fashion is all about wearing vibrant, neon colors from head to toe. Subculture is not only an aesthetic phenomenon but also an ideological phenomenon. I explore and investigate why these styles that emphasize the concept of “kawaii” (cute) are sweeping the world and are becoming popular among the youths outside Japan.

\r\nEuropean and American designers have always been influenced and inspired by folk and indigenous dress and needlework, such as embroidery techniques and design motifs, since they are different, unique, and “exotic”. However, in recent years, with the accelerated development of social media, protests and criticisms against the use of these designs in the creative field have been loud, explicit, and quick. In my presentation, I examine where we draw a line between appreciation and appropriation and question the ownership of culture, which may result in the separation between insiders and outsiders.

\r\nA History of Film Exhibition and Reception in Colonial Hong Kong (1897–1925) and Early Chinese Film Database are two digital humanities projects made to share new historical data on early cinema in Hong Kong and China. Information held in these two databases is pivotal to animating local film histories and can be utilized to form a new understanding of the incipient shape of cinema trade. This article seeks to aggregate the receptions of twenty canonical texts in Hong Kong from the late 1890s to mid 1920s by extracting relevant data from these two digital archives. A list of ‘classic’ films from Europe, America and China was compiled to test the canon by looking at their receptions in Hong Kong. My findings show that early films exhibited in Hong Kong did not match, to a large extent, the canonical history of either global or Chinese cinemas. Instead, other factors might affect the local exhibition and reception of foreign and Chinese films. These factors include stars, the track records of directors and studios, exhibitors, and distributors. In closing, the article considers the likely gaps in digital archives and the limitations of digital historiography.

\r\nThis talk explores how video art from the Asian diaspora complicates gendered and racialized projections of Asianness, with particular focus on the racial-gender imaginaries of post-Cold War neoliberal European. I take as my case study prominent artist Hito Steyerl’s “poor image” video practice, offering it as a form of visual sabotage that is not merely technological but also geopolitically informed. While critics have highlighted the ways in which Steyerl’s video work subverts the idea of indexical truth in the digital age, my interest lies in how the artist employs disruptive tactics in her work in ways that foreground historical demands for feminized and racialized servitude in the Asia Pacific.

\r\nThis talk explores the role of visual cultures, and film festival organizing in particular, in excavating minoritarian genealogies of migrant feminist organizing in Germany. It takes as its starting point the Asian Film Festival Berlin (AFFB)—the first film festival in Germany to focus on Asian and diasporic cinemas through an intersectional lens. Starting in 2008, the AFFB’s political agenda leads us to a little-known history of South Korean migrant women’s activism in 1970s Cold War West Germany, thereby highlighting the ways that visual cultural practices become key sites for documenting migrant feminist realities outside the dominant metrics of national history and domestic feminist discourse.

\r\nIn December 1972, newspapers in Hong Kong reported that The Board of Film Censors had banned Lung Kong's latest film The Call Girls 應召女郎(1973). Lung's film is often grouped together as part of a wave of Hong Kong soft-core sex/erotic films in the early-mid 1970s, but it also questions the illegalization and stigmatisation of sex work. To demonstrate how Lung's film and authorship clashed with the censors in relation to how contemporary Hong Kong society was depicted, this talk will situate Lung's film within the industrial and historical context it emerged in.
\r\n
\r\nWithin the commercial norms that favoured sex and violence in imported and local films in the early 1970s, the sex and violence in The Call Girls is not explicit or extreme, and far less so than many of the locally produced Hong Kong or foreign films released in Hong Kong around this time. It is more the way the film depicts contemporary Hong Kong that the censors found problematic. The complex reasons for why it was banned relates to how the censors wanted specific images of Hong Kong on-screen that did not match up to the lived reality; the censors charged Lung's film with smearing the image of Hong Kong and painting a great part of it as “a sink of iniquity”.
\r\n
\r\nIt was the Board of Appeal that took a different approach since they argued that it was because the film attempted social comment that it should be released. This talk will explore the censors’reasons for initially banning the film and also at how the ban being overturned after appeal and the release of The Call Girls after only several cuts was one of several key precedents that marked a shift in how cinema could represent Hong Kong society in the 1970s.

She is working on an article on periodising early Hong Kong cinema, an article on post-2019 Hong Kong cinema, and a book on Taiwanese and Hong Kong queer allegorical films.

\r\nFrom a Hong Kong and comparative perspective, Yeung argues that we should consider the structural similarities between the shared production conditions of taiyupian and Cantonese films, and adopt a broader view on the film circulation from wartime Shanghai, to post-war Hong Kong and Taiwan, in Mandarin, Cantonese and Taiyu. The porosity of these competitive film industries will be illustrated in this chapter with the particular example of the female spy series that spanned between 1946 to 1966, between Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
\r\n
\r\nYeung will show that taiyupian and Cantonese films share the same sources of materials from Chinese culture and the West. Moreover, Taiwan cinema (Taiyu and Mandarin) and Hong Kong cinema (Amoy, Cantonese and Mandarin) also influenced each other mutually. This chapter studies two pairs of taiyupian and Cantonese films, The Best Secret Agent 天字第一號 (1964) and Lady Spy No. 1 女間諜第一號 (1965) and The Tormented Beauty 烽火佳人 (1958) and the third film in The Best Secret Agent series, Golden Pheasant Heart 金雞心 (1965) to shed light on the connections between Taiyu cinema and Hong Kong Cantonese cinema during the Cold War.

\r\n施靜菲教授目前任教於國立臺灣大學藝術史研究所(2009-)，從事教學及研究工作。她的研究範圍主要是東亞陶瓷史及東亞與歐洲工藝美術交流，尤其著重觀察工藝技術及相關知識在不同文化間的傳遞。她 2002 年於牛津大學取得東方研究博士學位，曾於香港城市大學中國文化中心任教(2000-2002)，之後轉任國立故宮博物院器物處擔任助理研究員(2003-2009)，負責典藏、研究、策展及籌畫新博物館等相關事宜。

\r\nWith its minimalist narrative and long durational recordings of a family living on the margins of modern society and drifting around deserted urban spaces in Taiwan, Stray Dogs (Jiaoyou, Tsai Ming-liang, 2013) provides a productive reading of cinematic slowness and a critique of the globalising domination of capitalism and neoliberalism in a locally and culturally specific context.
\r\n
\r\nThis paper will use Stray Dogs as a case study to explore how slow cinema encompasses both a narrative that requires the audience’s sympathetic and intellectual understanding and a durational perception of time that calls for empathy and intuition. We will look at the film's temporal illegibility and radical use of long takes through an analysis of Gilles Deleuze's formulation of 'peaks of present' and 'sheets of past'. Moreover, I will repurpose this Deleuzian reading, through a study of David Martin-Jones' idea of' a hesitant cinematic ethics', as a moment of hesitation that leads to an act of resistance – a resistance against the ongoing capitalist and neoliberal standardisation, rationalisation and homogenisation of time's, or more specifically duration's, heterogenous nature.
\r\n
\r\nBy exploring the potential of ethical hesitation and political resistance, underscored by slow aesthetics such as the use of long takes, this paper aims to make the case for a specific and unique understanding of cinematic slowness as a philosophical signifier of empathy.

\r\nHow does a place or an object become a cultural icon? What do cultural icons tell us about our relationship with places and objects in the city? This talk will explore the thing agency and the place-making power of cultural icons by examining the (trans)formation and the cultural reverberation of selected icons from Hong Kong. In order to unfold interactions and intersectionalities in/as relations, the talk will trace the cultural trajectories embedded in the actor-network of thing, place and body in the textual and material worlds. As a whole, this will enable us to better understand the undermined and the underrepresented, human and nonhuman, and uncover the community building potential in shared cultural experiences.

\r\nDr. Helena Wu is Canada Research Chair and Assistant Professor of Hong Kong Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. She is also Convenor of the UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative. She has written on the topics of Hong Kong cinema, culture, literature, media, and identity for journals and edited volumes such as Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies (2018), Chinese Martial Arts and Media Culture (2018), Hong Kong Keywords (2019), Global Media and China (2020), Journal of Chinese Cinemas (2020), Asian Cinema (2022), HKU Journal of Chinese Studies (2023), and Screen (forthcoming). She is the author of The Handover After the Handover: Places, Things and Cultural Icons in Hong Kong (Liverpool University Press, 2020), where she explores the cultural reverberations of local icons in colonial and post-handover Hong Kong.

\r\nWhen the Harvey Weinstein allegations in October 2017 opened up the depth and breadth of sexual harassment in Hollywood, Weinstein’s associates in mainland China and Hong Kong came under scrutiny as well. One of the first responses from the People’s Republic of China came in the form of an opinion piece published in the English-language edition of the government-run newspaper China Daily. Sava Hassan, an expat Egyptian-Canadian residing in mainland China, wrote "Weinstein Case Demonstrates Cultural Differences," in which he argues that sexual harassment does not pose a problem in China because of the timidity of Chinese men and the prevailing conservative values of the society. Although claiming the article only reflects his observations as a teacher in China, Hassan’s ignorance of the actual situation did not belie the fact that China Daily published a perspective that thoroughly disregarded the facts. Internet response was immediate and China Daily expeditiously withdrew the piece; however, the Chinese press inadvertently added fuel to the growing transnational conflagration around the smoldering issue of sexual harassment and violence against women in the People’s Republic.
\r\n
\r\nThe hashtag crossed the Chinese Internet firewall to circulate using the characters for “rice”/ 米 (mi) and rabbit 兔 (tu) to stand in for the English #MeToo and avoid censorship. As these grievances span the worlds of entertainment, higher education, and beyond, the ways in which business, gender-based violence, and sexual politics form transnational links from China through Hong Kong to Hollywood makes Weinstein’s story global, and the movement continues to roil Chinese popular culture today. This presentation updates scholarship on #MeToo in China to look at its impact on contemporary cinema and media culture including the case of Kris Wu and his transnational star presence spanning mainland China, Canada, and Korea.
